Nor Cal Squash 1973-74 Yearbook

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA SQUASH RACQUETS ASSOCIATION YEARBOOK 1973-1974

Waldo Ashby and Ned Mundell

I began playing squash in 1971-72; my freshman year at Cal. It was during this period that the Northern California Squash Racquets Association coincidentally came into existence. In the early years. the organization took great pride in chronicling the squash year’s events of all of the region’s clubs,  For the record…….and to honor the past.

ALEX RETIRES FROM COMPETITION

miller_eichmann1_med
Ralfe Miller, Alex Eichmann
After twelve wonderful years of exciting play and unselfish contributions to NorCal Squash, Alex Eichmann has announced his retirement from the amateur ranks.

Yet with all his successes in competition, Alex's greatest successes are his contributions to all the players he met, coached, advised, encouraged and inspired. It is a great asset to any sport when the best will take the time and interest to help the beginner.

He won four Nor Cals, five Cal States, and four Pacific Coast titles. Alex starred in all tournaments in which he was a part of, won the Pacific Coast Doubles in 1966 with Dan Morgan, and achieved national ranking after a sparkling defeat of Gulmast Khan, son of Hashim. in the 1972 Nationals, and although he lost to the eventual Champion Victor Niederhoffer, he did defeat Victor three times during his career, particularly in the 1970 Nor Cals.

To complete his career, he played number one on the Pacific Coast Team which won the 1974 National Team title. Other team members were John Hutchinson, George Morfitt,  Bob Puddicombe, and Dick Radloff.

The Pacific Coast had previously won the title in 1954, 1957 and 1961.

Alex is not leaving local squash for he is the home professional at the Peninsula Squash Club, a modern 4-court facility located at East 3rd Avenue and South Humboldt Street in San Mateo.

Fellow members can only wish Alex all the best and look forward to playing in his new house.

FOR FLOYD SVENSSON - LIFE BEGINS AT 40

Daly Svennson
60+ Seattle's tireless Dick Daly measured former champion, Floyd Svensson
carefully and proved convincingly that he was the best in the field.

Twelve years ago, Floyd Svensson discovered the game of squash racquets.  Although rather slight of build, Floyd possessed good lungs and strong legs - attributes, necessary for good squash, Floyd had developed as a long-distance runner earlier in his life.  Add to his hand-eye coordination with a racquet developed on the tennis courts, and you have the ingredients that are needed to become an outstanding squash player.

After only his first few tournament victories, it was apparent that Floyd was going to be a good squash player.  However, no one really suspected how good he would eventually become.  Playing and residing in the San Francisco Bay Area, Floyd had to learn the game without the typical benefit of formal lessons or coaching.  By observing and studying the “A” players, and applying what he saw, Floyd moved up through the ranks to Class "A" and became a National Champion.

By his nature, Floyd determined to win with the goal of becoming a multiple-time champion. To realize such an ambitious goal, it was necessary to practice diligently (on his own privately built court}and with rigorous dedication.

Coming together this year, Floyd was joyously rewarded for this dedication.

In February, his ambitious self-defined goal was realized when he successfully defended his US National Senior title he won last year; annexed his first Canadian Senior title; and to reveal his dominance in North America, he journeyed to Mexico and handily won the Mexican Senior National Championship.  No player had ever before accomplished the incomparable feat of winning the “Triple Crown”.  And everyone suspects that no one will ever accomplish the feat again. (unless Floyd himself repeats next year.)

To further demonstrate his dedication to the game, Floyd was not just as a player but contributed in other capacities such as serving at various times, as Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice-President of the N.C.S.R.A.

We, in the N.C.S.R.A., are so proud to have such a remarkable player such as Floyd be a part of our squash community.

THE OLYMPIC CLUB C-D SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS

The entrants from the city’s Jewish Community Center (J.C.C.) DOMINATED this year’s Olympic Club’s C-D Single Squash Tournament by winning outright three out of the four classes and placing the runner-up in Class “C”.

A newcomer to San Francisco, Bob Mueller, representing the J.C.C. with a #6 ranking in Virginia before moving to the City, ran away with the Class “C” draw beating fellow club-mate Tom Huster in the Finals: 15-12, 15-12, 15-7. The only opponent who tested Mueller en route to the title was the Olympic Club’s Steve Jones who in the quarter-finals almost pulled off the upset of the tournament.

After beating Steve Marks (JCC) 3-2 on Friday evening, Jones appeared ready for Mueller on Saturday morning,  In a thrilling match that had the gallery standing and applauding after seemingly after every point, Jones took the first two games with a dazzling display of low, hard rail shots and soft front corner nicks, 15-12, 15-11.

During the next game, Jones kept the momentum going with a lead of 11-7 before the tide turned when Mueller’s experience and steadiness took over. Jones ended up just short allowing Mueller to turn the pivotal 3rd game to his favor 15-12 and went on to win the final two games 15-7 and 15-5.

Mueller was never challenged again.

He breezed through has his next match beating Olympic Club’s John MacKay and into the Finals without the loss of a game.

The aforementioned Steve Marks won the Class C Consolation finals by defeating UC’s Carl Milofsky without a loss of a game - 4, 9, 10.  After his tough match Friday night match against Mueller, Mark’s route to the Consolation finals was relatively smooth and easy.

In Class “D”, three players from UC Berkeley made the semi-finals. The final player making the semis was JCC's Scott Lambert, a player who honed his game at Berkeley defeated Kris Surano    3-0, In the other semi, it was Tom Raasch coming from behind to win in 5 by the scores of (10-15), 17-14, 7-15, 15-9, 15-4.

The Class D Consolation Finals provided a contrast of styles between a senior experienced squash player on the one hand and a youthful new-comer on the other. OC’s William Smith who started playing squash only within the past few years gave way to JCC’s Dr. Gordon Smith and his steady, savvy play in 3 games - 9, 9, 7.  Both players had moved into the Finals without serious challenges in the "B" Consolation bracket.

RALFE D. MILLER INVITATIONAL
November 16-18, 1973

The 1973-74 squash season officially started with Alex Eichmann blasting four opponents to win the Ralfe D. Miller Invitational at the University of California, Berkeley courts.

In order, he knocked out steadily improving Larry Chargin (Fresno) 3-1, George Nedwed (San Diego) 3-0, Joe Friedman (Los Angeles) 3-1, and finally, Steve Gurney (Los Angeles) (9-15), 15-9, 15-12, 15-14.

Gurnemade a one-point class in the fourth game, but to no avail.

Steve had reached the finals with a fine win over current National Senior Champ, Floyd Svensson (Orinda) 3-1, in the semi's; he earlier defeated Jim Feutz (OC) and Alan Hager (UCSRC).

In the Class "A" Consolation final, Alan Fox (OC) beat Mike McNally (Fresno) 15-8, (8-15), (17-18), 15-8, 15-8.

A total of over 200 players competed in this event, ably run by Dick Crawford and his students.

In other classes, the results were:

In Class "B", a record total of 34 players entered. The finals featured another north-south duel as George Nedwed came from behind against a tiring Jose Alonso (U.C.S.R.C.) and won (11-15), (11-15), 15-5, 15-9, 15-5. The unseeded Nedwed defeated all his other opponents (including UCSRC'S top-seeded Jim Marver by 3-0 scores.

In the "C"'s, top-seeded Tom Huster (JCC) lived up to his ranking with a 15-7, (16-18), 15-10, 15-10 finals win over Patrick Stine (Presidio). Earlier, Huster beat fourth-seeded Bob Geske (U.C.S.R.C.) 3-0 in the semi's while the unseeded Stine took seventh-seeded John Lau (UCSRC) also 3-0 in the semis.

In the Veterans B Class, both finalists encountered difficultin their semis. Vince Palmo (Fresno) just did get by Bill Garratt (OC) (10-15), 15-12, (15-17,) 16-13, 15-11 in his semi's tussle, while Jack Sarafian (Fresno) had trouble with the always tough Steve Yost (OC) 17-14, 15-14, 15-14.

In the finals, it was Vince Palmo in three, 15-8, 15-11, 18-15.

After starting with three rather lop-sided games in the class D finals, the two players settled down to business in the last two games, trading point for point. Scott Lambert (U.C.S.R.C.) finally prevailed by a single point in the final game over Ans Dzelzkalns (U.C.S.R.C.). Scores were 15-3, (7-15), 15-8, (15-17) and 17-16.

UNIVERSITY CLUB OF SAN FRANCISCO INVITATIONAL
December 7-9, 1973

The well-run University Club of San Francisco tourney featured a finale match between the host club's Charlie Hoeveler and Alex Eichmann (OC). Hoeveler is one of the finest tennis players in this area, as well as one of our best squashers. Unfortunately, he plays more tennis than squash and we don't get a chance to see him play much.

In quick order, Alex won the first two games 15-9, 15-6 with a dazzling array of boasts, cross-court drives, and front wall drops. Charlie recovered enough to win the third game 15-12 but after the five-minute break period, Alex finished the match 15-10.

Earlier, Eichmann disposed of Murray Smith (UCSF) 15-11, (12-15), 17-16, (14-18) and 18-15; then Floyd Svensson (Orinda) (14-15) 15-9, 16-14, 15-12. Hoeveler defeated Ted Ward and Bob French, both from Los Angeles, 3-1.

In the A Veterans, Murray Smith defeated the always tenacious Ed Marr (OC) in the finals (9-15), 15-12, 15-18, (17-18), 15-10. Marr earlier had an outstanding upset victory over highly favored Floyd Svensson, 3-0.

In the B Veterans, Steve Yost (OC) gained revenge for an earlier loss at Berkeley in the Ralfe D. Miller when he outlasted a tough Jack Sarafian (Fresno) by the scores of 16-13, (11-15), 15-9, (8-15), 18-16. This was Yost's first tourney victory in two years.

Jose Alonso with the UC Faculty League Team
In Class B, Jose Alonso (U.C.S.R.C.) prevailed over a stubborn Jerry Gitt (Orinda) 16-14, (14-17), 15-9, 15-14 in the finals narrowly defeating Ron Schneider (JCC), 3-2.

Jose defeated Bill Burgess (LA) 3-1 in the semi's, after narrowly defeating Ron Schneider (JCC) 3-2.  Jerry earlier defeated Dick Crawford (U.C.S.R.C.) and Ross Ziegler (OC).

Thomas “Joe” Egan (Presidio) slipped by Nick Listorti (OC) (9-15), 15-8, 15-9, 15-12 to win the silverware in the Class C finals. Joe’s delicate touch having previously disposed of Howard Maierhofer (OC) and  Peter Gaynor (UCSF), while Nick survived a 3-2 long rally duel with Steve Jones (OC) before besting John Campodonico (OC) 3-1.

In Class ""D, Ted Gross (U.C.S.R.C.) finished off Chuck Gran t(UCSRC) in the finals (9-15), 15-8, 15-9, 15-12. Ted, having beaten Marguerite Montalbano (Venice), while Chuck beat Bill Phipps (Fresno) to reach the finals.

OLYMPIC CLUB INVITATIONAL
January 17-20, 1974

Alex Eichmann with Jim Marver
Alex Eichmann won The Olympic Club Championship for the sixth time with a convincing 15-11, 15-6, (8-15), 15-12 win over a game but outclassed Floyd Svensson (Orinda) before the largest squash finals crowd here since the 1967 Pacific Coast Championships.

Alex displayed his usual amazing variety of shots in totally dominating Floyd during the first two games which were over quite quickly. However, Floyd took a deep breath and came back strongly in the third game, taking an early lead which he managed to hold throughout.

The fourth game was close until the score reached 9-all at which point Floyd made two errors and with that little edge, Alex finished off the game and match.

In the semi's, Alex was tested by an ever-improving Jim Pearson (Orinda) 18-17, 15-11, (10-15), 15-6.

The two closest Class "A" matches played pitted Murray Smith (UCSF), first against John Dennis (Portland) and then against Floyd Svensson. With a spine-tingling "no set" fifth game, Murray beat John15-10, 15-12, (12-15). (9-15), 15-14 to advance into the semis against Floyd who had polished off Larry Chargin (Fresno) by 15-12, 18-15, 15-11.

Floyd and Murray see-sawed back and forth with long rallies and some beautiful shot-making until Floyd broke the match open in the fifth game and won 16-14, (9-15,) 15-10, 10-15, 15-4,

Friend and John McGarry
Alan Fox not only did a superb job as this year's tourney chairman but he also won the A-B Consolation, beating Mike McNally (Fresno) (11-15), 15-3, 15-5, 17-15;. This was Alan's second A-Consolation victory this season and both at Mike's expense.

Ed Marr's (OC) 15-8, (11-15), 11-15, 15-0, 15-8 win over Svensson (his second this season) was a tremendous personal victory and guaranteed him the A Vets Championship, as he advanced through Jim Frolik by default and Dr. Frank Smith (Pebble Beach) 15-13, 15-5, 15-12 in the finals.

In the B's, Lee Pekary (Los Altos) beat Ron Mayes (UCSRC) 15-4 ,15-9, 16-13; Ken Hoyt (Fresno) (10-15), 15-7, 15-9, (16-17), 15-13, fourth-seeded Jim Marver (U.C.S.R.C.) (15-18), 15-12, 17-16, (9-15), 15-11, top-seeded Jose Alonso (U.C.S.R.C.) (17-18), 15-7, 15-11, (8-15), 15-9 and in the finals, second-seeded Jerry Gitt (Orinda) 15-8, 15-12, (7-15), (11-15), 15-12.

Classes C and D had 32 and 55 entries, respectively. After many, many matches, it was David Hogg (U.C.S.R.C.) over Pat Stine (Presidio) 15-12, 15-9, 18-17 in the Class "C" final.

In the "D" finals, the result was unrecorded. It was newcomer Van Sloan (Mountain View) out-scrambling Kent Stow (OC) (10-15), 15-13, 15-8, 15-6.

CALIFORNIA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
February 1-2, 1974

The California State Championships, held in alternate years between Northern and Southern California, was hosted this year by the University of San Francisco, Chairman John Barton of the host club did a splendid job coordinating the tourney and deserves special credit for the success of the event.

Alex Eichmann
In Class "A", Alex Eichmann (OC) won his fourth tournament of the season but not without a stiff challenge. After straight game wins over Jim Stacy (UCSRC) and Joe Friedman (Venice), Alex had to stage a come-back in the finals to defeat a tiring Ted Ward (LA) 15-7, (13-15), (11-15), 15-6 15-4.

Ward made it to the finals by playing superb squash in beating Floyd Svensson (Orinda) 3-0 in the quarters and then continued his fine play against second-seeded Steve Gurney, winning 15-6, 15-8, (8-15) and 15-8 in the semis.

Unseeded Jim Marver (UCSRC) won the Class "B" as top-seeded Jose  Alonso (UCSRC) succumbed early to Tom Sperry (UCSRC) and second-seeded Carl Mersola (LA) lost a close match in the semi's to Jerry Gitt (Orinda) 15-13, (4-15), 15-13, (12-15) and 17-15. Marver beat Sperry in the semi's (11-15),15-8, 15-10, 15-10. It was Marver in the finals over a tiring Gitt (11-15,) 15-10, 15-7, 15-5.

Ed Marr (OC) added the Cal State A Vet Championship to The Olympic Club A Vet title he won a month earlier. In order, Marr beat Larry Chargin (Fresno) 3-1, Kal Gladstone (Venice) 3-1 and in the finals, first- seeded Murray Smith (UCSF) by 15-9, 15-12, (11-15) and 15-12. Smith got by Floyd Svensson in the semi's 15-6, (17-18,) 18-14 and 15-14,

In an extremely close finals match in "B" Vets, Steve Yost (OC) finally prevailed over Vince Palmo (Fresno) in five games, 15-7, 15-9, (14-16), (13-15) and 15-10. Yost made it to the finals by beating Harry Spencer (Reno) 3-2, Park Dingwell (OC) 3-1, and Jack Sarafian (Fresno) 3-1. Palmo advanced through his half of the draw without losing a game.

Because of the limited number of women entered, a round-robin was held. Joyce Davenport (SF), former National Champion, emerged as the winner with Marguerite Montalbano (Venice) as the runner-up,

Chapin Coit, the “Old Vet", came through to win the Senior B title, besting Dana Prescott (Presidio) 3-1 in the finals.

Top-seeded Pat Stine (Presidio) came from behind to capture the Class "C" title from Paul Pelosi (OC) (9-15), 15-6, (9-15), 15-10 and 15-17. In the semi's, it was Stine over Steve Jones (OC) in three; it was Pelosi over Ted Gross (UCSRC) also in three straight.

Kris Surano (UCSRC) took the Class D crown with a 15-8, 15-10, 15-12 finals match win over Dale Ames (OC).

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA SQUASH CHAMPIONSHIPS
March 8-10, 1974

More than 160 players competed in eight different classes in the Northern California Championship.
This final tournament of the 1973/74 season was won by Alex Eichmann (OC) with a finals Class "A" win over Floyd Svensson (Orinda) 15-12, 15-12, (17-18), 15-9. In the semi's, Eichmann struggled past Ed Marr (OC) by 15-9, (10-15), (15-13) and 17-14. Svensson was having just as difficult a time in his semi's match getting by Murray Smith (UCSF) (10-15), 15-6, 18-16
and 15-12.

Jim Marver (UCSRC) annexed his second Class "B" title of the season. Just as in the Cal State finals, Jim had Jerry Gitt's (Orinda) number. Finals scores were 15-10, 15-8, (9-15) and 18-16.
On his march to the title, Marver completely dominated all opponents in his half of the draw winning 3-0 in each match. Jim's domination was so complete that only lan Beardmore (Vancouver) was able to win 10 points in one game.

Gitt, on the other hand, was lucky to reach the finals. Jerry barely got by Andy Hornick (U.C.S.R.C.), Nick Travis (Stanford) and Dan Dudas (LA) in the semi's, all by 3-2 scores.

One of the most outstanding and exciting matches of the whole tournament was the one between David Tepper (JCC) and Dudas in the quarters. Each point was well played between the equally-matched rivals. Scores were (12-15), 16-13, (12-15), 15-12 and 18-17.

In the "B" Vets, Steve Yost (OC) won his third title of the season and in the process made Jack Sarafian (Fresno) a "bridesmaid" for the fourth time this season. Down 2 -l at the break, Yost managed to win the last 2 games,  Scores were 15-12, (11-15), (9-15), 15-8 and 15-13. In the semi's, Yost took third-seed Don Marken (OC) 3-1, while Sarafian beat Fresno club mate Vince Palmo (second-seeded) when Vince had to retire due to an injury after the first game.

Other results: Dick Specht (OC) took the Senior "B" crown with a (16-17), 15-10, 15-14, 15-11 win over Dr. John Callander (UCSF)

Ted Gross (UCSRC) beat Stu Gordon (UCSF) 15-7, 17-14, 15-12 to add the Class "C" title to his list of victories. Earlier in the season, Ted won the Class D in the University Club tourney. Quite outstanding progress!

The Class D title was won by John Mackay(OC) with a 3-1 finals win over the host club's Phil Smith. In the semis, John barely survived over Mark Rosenstein (UCSRC) 3-2; Phil just squeaked past Walt Vogl (NSC) 3-2;

Thirteen women vied for the Women's title. In the finals, Lynne Billard (Stanford) downed Barb Henrikson (UCSRC) 3-0. In the semi's, Lynne beat Judy Scott (Sausalito) 3-0 while Barb beat Elizabeth Brown (UCSRC).

Thomas Leep (OC) was the class of the Novice Division winning in the finals over Rick Dumont (UCSRC) 15-6, 15-8, 15-4. Dumont beat club-mate Stephen Edmonds 3-2 in his semi’s.  Leep had an easier time in his semi's match taking three straight from Mark Taper (UCSRC).

FRESNO YMCA

In spite of squash players in Fresno limited by having only one court at the YMCA without a gallery, the Fresno players compete each year in all the tournaments in Northern California and a few in Southern California.

But, this could be the year that Fresno will end up with four new courts!  Two courts are scheduled to be built at the Fig Garden Swim and Racquet Club and two courts are planned to be built at the proposed San Joaquin Men's Athletic and Racket Club. When these courts come to be then perhaps Fresno could sponsor a Central California Invitational.

Players who distinguished themselves this year by fine play were Jack SarafianVince Palmo, and Larry Chargin. Jack and Vince finished #2 and #3, respectively, in the B Vet rankings. Larry, #6 ranked B player last year, managed to play well enough this year to break into the top 10 in the A rankings.

An interesting anecdote involving a Fresno player occurred in a Class "D" match in the University Club of San Francisco Invitational. "Big Bill" Phipps (Fresno) was playing Lillian Taylor (LA) and leading 2-0 in games. With the score tied in the third game 16-16, a let-point situation occurred in favor of Lily. However, rather than call a let-point, Lily played let only and proceeded to lose the next two points and the match. Lily claimed she was too tired and did not want to take a chance of winning the game and going to a fourth game.

(EDITOR'S NOTE) It appeared to us that Bill actually needed the Gatorade more than Lily.)

JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER
San Francisco

The season started with a sensational performance by JCC players in the traditional first event of the year, The Olympic Club C-D Tournament in October. The JCC had four finalists out of a possible eight in the four classes and won three titles. Bob Mueller (JCC) defeated Tom Huster (JCC) 3-0 for the "C" title; Steve Marks (JCC) defeated Carl Milofsky (UCSRC) 3-0 for the "C" Consolation crown; Gordon Clark (JCC) defeated Bill Smith (OC) in the "D" Consolation, also by the score of 3-0.

The rest of the season was a combination of some successes, frustrations, and defeats. On the "plus" side, our activity was 100% enthusiastic as usual, and we had excellent participation in both "C" and "D" leagues and fine turnouts in tournaments.

In NCSRA League play, the "C" team compiled a 3-5 record while the "D" team won three and lost four. Tom Huster was Chairman of the "C" League and did an excellent job.

Results in tournaments were rather disappointing after such a fast start in the "C-D". Our only victors were Tom Huster, 3-1 over Pat Stine (Presidio) in the Ralfe Miller; Chapin Coit, 3-1 over Dana Prescott for the Cal State B Senior title.

The JCC was represented for the second year by an "unofficial" team at the annual and very pleasant Cate School Invitational in Carpinteria in early February. Tom Huster, Nick ThomasSteve MarksGordon Clark, and Chapin Coit did their best, but only Clark reached the semi-finals, losing to Bob Harmon (LA), 3-1.

The single squash court at the JCC was closed during January-February for extensive electrical re-wiring. This caused obvious problems with league matches, team practice, and daily play; our players suffered accordingly. By mid-October, 1974, we will have one of the finest courts in the Bay Area as we have been allocated sufficient funds to have our court repaired and painted.

We anticipate the 1974-75 season with great hopes, although we shall lose two team stalwarts, Nick Thomas going to South Africa and Jim Goodyear heading East with a teaching assignment.

THE OLYMPIC CLUB
San Francisco

Once again, the Olympic Club and its players had a most successful season in both intra-club and inter-club squash play.

The Olympic Club team won the "A" League title finishing the season undefeated. Members of the winning team were Alex Eichmann, Murray SmithEd MarrAlan Fox, and Ross Ziegler.

In the "B", "C", and "D" Leagues, the Olympic Club teams did not fare as well although the "D" team did make the playoff round.

In tournament play, Olympians had one of their best years ever.

The winners and their respective titles are as follows:

Novice         Thomas Leep, Northern Cals
"D"               John Mackay, Northern Cals
"C"               Steve Jones, Cate Invitational
"B Sr."          Dick Specht
"B Vet"         Steve Yost, Cal State, University Club of San Francisco, Northern Cals
"A-B Cons." Alan Fox, Ralfe Miller, Olympic Club
"A Vet"         Ed Marr, Olympic Club Invitational, Cal State
Murray Smith, University Club of San Francisco

Olympic Club Invitational, Cal State, Northern Cals, University Club of Los Angeles,
                     Cate School Invitational

In the Club Championships, finals results were:

Ed Marr def. Murray Smith, 3-1
Jim Feutz def. Steve Yost, 3-1

N Mans Garratt def. Jim Stephenson 3-1

PRESIDIO SQUASH CLUB

The Presidio Squash Club is located in the main gymnasium at the Presidio of San Francisco. There is one court which is three years old and there is a gallery area which can accommodate about 20 spectators.

Approximately 35 active squashers play at the Club with about ten belonging to the Northern California Squash Racquets Association. This past season, the Presidio entry in the "C" League lost in a close playoff to the UC Berkeley team by a (2-3) score and, thus, they were the runner-up team in the League. The team was handicapped in the playoffs and were it not for an injury to one of their players, they might have come out on top. Alas.

The Club Championships were held in April at the season's end. In a double elimination tournament,

Joe Egan emerged victorious, eventually defeating Patrick Stine in the finals in a tough 3-1 match.

The "C" Team is eagerly looking forward to the 1974-75 season. With four of our top players returning, and the hope of new blood in the coming year, our team ought to be even stronger.

UNIVERSITY CLUB OF SAN FRANCISCO

The University Club of San Francisco wishes to congratulate the following players for their exciting play and good sportsmanship in last season's tournaments:

Paul Pelosi
Stuart Gordon
Peter Gaynor
Charlie Hoeveler
Gordon Clark
Phil Smith
Paul Pringle
and the always tenacious
Murray Smith

Each of these players managed to win silverware for winning or being runner-up in his respective class.

After many years of planning, our Club is finally going to actually have some new squash courts. The ground has been broken for the facility which will contain 4 singles courts and the only doubles court in Northern California.

We hope to complete construction sometime prior to Floyd Svensson's successful defense of his titles, or his conversion to paddle ball.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA MEDICAL CENTER

This year, the University of California Medical Center maintained a high level of interest in squash while increasing the number of players who participated in tournaments and league competition.

One of the highlights of the season was achieved by the Class D Team which won the NCSRA D League Championship.

Mike Goldfield
Ed Green
Al Rubin
Robert Lapointe
Bill Miller
Joe Jezukewicz

This team also distinguished itself when it was awarded the coveted Court Jostler trophy for its performance during the league playoffs. This was the first time in NCSRA history that this award was made to a team rather than to an individual. This is one performance that the Team does not wish to duplicate.
